VINYL SIDING

PROS: Price, ability to make repairs, fade resistance (newer technology) maintenance-free. SOLID-CORE vinyl siding: Incredible panel strength, rigidity, tight seams, up to a 5.0 R-value added to the home. Nearly all of the major manufacturers offer this technology, although there are varying degrees of differences among the panels. Warranties are now offered which cover not just the panel itself, butlabor - for life (non pro-rated!); fading up to 3 hunter units of color (virtually imperceptible to your eyes).

CONS: While becoming more brittle with age, cheap vinyl can crack under extreme temperatures. Unsightly seams; but again this is found typically in cheaper, hollow-back siding.
If you get slightly edgy or nervous thinking of your Excel bill, solid core siding (RIGHT) will add up to an R-Value of 4.0 to your exterior walls, saving you $ big time.

FIBER CEMENT SIDING

PROS: Fiber cement siding, and in particular, James Hardie siding (aka.Hardie Plank siding, Hardy Board siding), are quickly becoming the most talked about siding product in recent years. The siding is a unique mixture of 93% wood fiber and 6% cement, with the remaining 1% adhesives. It is strong, durable, and attempts to duplicate the look and feel of wood (successfully).
CONS: This product is NOT maintenance-free and will need to be painted throughout its (your) lifetime. Exposing this siding product to water causes de-lamination to unpainted boards. If you don’t believe this claim, simple leave a piece out in the rain for a day or so and watch what happens. Another alarming negative (for the installers) is the silica dust which is produced when Hardie Plank is cut. SEE: James Hardie Siding for official cautions.

STEEL SIDING

PROS: Strength, durability, protection.
CONS: Noisy; difficult to repair; conducts both heat and cold, permanently dents. Seamless steel siding can expand and contract to such a large degree depending the size of the run, that some claim to hear the expansion and contraction of the siding.

CEDAR SIDING

PROS: Strength, durability, protection, beauty, classic look.
CONS: Cedar siding does require 7-10 year maintenance of staining or painting (Consumer Reports has a recent report on the testing of exterior paints).
